What is a database and how do I manage it?

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you might have read my post “Database Management for Business Development”. The blog details why good database management is good for your business. This time however I want to go right back to basics. We are going to explore what a database is and why they need managing to support your business’ growth and vision.

“So, step one, what is a database?” You are probably asking.

As a freelancer specialising in database management, I’m glad you asked. A database is fundamentally your business’ virtual filing system – managing and organising your business’ data. Databases need to work with your business requirements and comprise a range of data from customer details to payment processes to supplies and stock. Particularly if you work with customer details, managing your database system is vital to stay GDPR compliant.

“Ok so databases are important for my business, but how do I manage them?”

This is where I come in, as a freelance database developer my work ensures custom database development. As a full stack website developer I work with you to ensure your website is built to your vision and that includes back-end work to design and develop easy to use databases. I am used to working with a range of database management systems including Microsoft SQL.

“Microsoft SQL?” Some of you might be asking.

SQL or Structured Query Language to give it its full name is a domain-specific language (one used for specific contexts) that is used to manage databases. It is perfect for data management as it works to manage data manipulation, data queries, data access control and data definition. All of which you need if you are handling large amounts of data.

Anyway, back to the importance of database management. Existing databases need to be robust and ensure data security – a data leak can be a GDPR disaster for a Small or Medium Enterprise. Working with SQL database management I make sure that databases balance being an accessible database that works for your development team and business growth whilst maintaining data integrity. Additionally ensuring your database is correctly managed makes your life easier as your data management ensures that the database has speedy backup and recovery.

Database management can seem difficult when you’re managing so much information and working to follow GDPR legislation. With a good database management service, you can ensure your data is correctly processed and works for you not against you.

If you are interested in designing a new database or developing an existing database, I offer a range of database management services including: A bespoke database development process;
